Dynamic Segmentation

Dynamic Segmentation

Dynamic segmentation automatically updates segment membership as the underlying data changes. Instead of building a one-off list, the segment is defined by rules and people or accounts move in and out as they continue to meet, or stop meeting, those criteria.

Example

A marketing team could define a segment for known contacts at target accounts who have shown recent interest in a product area. If a contact starts matching the activity criteria, they enter the segment. If the activity becomes stale or the account no longer meets the fit criteria, they leave it.

That makes dynamic segmentation useful for campaigns and journeys that need to respond to current behaviour rather than a list exported at a particular point in time.

Dynamic does not necessarily mean behavioural

The word dynamic describes how membership is maintained, not what data is used. A dynamic segment can be based on firmographic, CRM, lifecycle or behavioural criteria. Behavioural segmentation describes segments based specifically on actions and interests. A segment can therefore be both dynamic and behavioural.

Using SalesWings data in segmentation

SalesWings can generate behavioural and intent-related data that can be used downstream in systems such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement, Braze and Segment. This allows segmentation rules to use information such as recent activity, scoring or interest tags rather than relying only on static profile attributes.

What to check before automating a segment

  • Entry and exit logic: define both, otherwise contacts can remain in a segment after the original reason for including them has disappeared.
  • Data freshness: the segment is only as current as the data feeding it.
  • Activation logic: decide what should happen when membership changes and whether repeated entry should trigger the same action again.
  • Audience size: monitor the segment after launch so a rule change or data issue does not silently change the audience.

See our guide to behavioural segmentation for a deeper treatment of using behavioural data for audience creation and personalization.
