Revenue Attribution

Revenue Attribution

Revenue attribution connects marketing or buyer activity to closed-won revenue. It extends attribution beyond leads and opportunities so teams can analyse which campaigns, channels or touchpoints are associated with business that actually became revenue.

Revenue attribution is only as good as the path from marketing to opportunity

To reach revenue, the data has to connect early marketing activity to the people and accounts involved, then to the opportunity and its final outcome. Missing Campaign Members, contact roles, source data or opportunity relationships can break that path long before the revenue report is built.

Closed-won revenue is a strong outcome, but a slow feedback loop

In longer B2B sales cycles, the marketing activity that influenced a deal may have happened months before the revenue appears. That makes revenue attribution useful for strategic analysis, but often too slow to be the only metric used for day-to-day campaign decisions.

Use pipeline as a leading indicator

Pipeline attribution can show which activity is associated with opportunity creation earlier in the journey. Revenue attribution then shows which of those opportunities actually converted. Looking at both can reveal sources that create a lot of pipeline but relatively little won business, or vice versa.

Attribution is not causality

Assigning revenue credit to a touchpoint does not prove that touchpoint caused the purchase. The result depends on the model chosen and the touchpoints that were successfully captured. Comparing models and reviewing known deals can help teams avoid treating a precise-looking number as objective truth.
