Event Tracking

Event Tracking

Event tracking records specific actions as named events so they can be analysed or used in downstream workflows. Typical examples include form submissions, button clicks, content downloads, product interactions or other actions that matter to the sales and marketing process.

What makes event tracking useful

The value is not the event itself, but the context around it. A useful event definition normally includes the action, when it happened, where it happened and, where available, the lead or account it belongs to. That makes it possible to distinguish a one-off interaction from a repeated pattern of activity.

How event data can be used in Salesforce

SalesWings can use first-party behavioural events as inputs for scoring, tagging and sales alerts. Once activity can be associated with a known CRM record, those events give sales teams context on what a lead or account has been doing rather than only showing a score.

For example, a demo request might trigger immediate follow-up, while a sequence of product-page visits and content downloads could contribute to a broader behavioural score. The weighting should reflect the sales process rather than assuming the same event has the same value for every business.

Event tracking vs page-view tracking

Page-view tracking records which pages were visited. Event tracking is more specific: it records a defined action. A page visit can itself be treated as an event, but events can also capture interactions that do not create a new page view, such as a video play or button click.

Implementation considerations

  • Use consistent event names: inconsistent naming makes reporting and scoring difficult to maintain.
  • Capture useful properties: page, source, product, campaign or other context can make the event more useful later.
  • Avoid tracking everything: collect events that support a clear reporting, segmentation, scoring or workflow use case.
