Behavioural Lead Scoring

Behavioural Lead Scoring

Behavioural lead scoring assigns weight to what a lead actually does, such as viewing product pages, returning to the website, submitting forms or engaging with selected content. The score changes as new activity occurs, giving sales a way to prioritise based on current engagement rather than static profile data alone.

(Rule-based behavioural scoring with SalesWings can assign different weight to different buyer activities.)

Not every action should be worth the same number of points

A pricing-page visit, a return to a product page and a routine newsletter open do not necessarily carry the same commercial meaning. The scoring model should reflect which activities have historically mattered in the company’s sales process rather than simply rewarding volume.

Behavioural scoring and fit should be kept conceptually separate

Behaviour tells you how active the lead is. Fit tells you whether the person or company resembles the customers you want. A highly active poor-fit lead can otherwise outrank a quieter but much stronger target account if both dimensions are collapsed into one unexplained number.

SalesWings can surface behavioural scores and fit grades separately in Salesforce so reps can see both dimensions.

Recency matters, but there is no universal decay window

Old activity should not necessarily carry the same weight forever. The appropriate lookback or decay logic depends on the sales cycle and the event being scored. A long enterprise buying process may justify retaining context for longer than a short transactional cycle.

Make the underlying activity visible

Behavioural scoring is easier for sales to trust when reps can inspect the events behind the score. A jump from 30 to 60 is more useful when the rep can also see that the lead returned to product pages and viewed pricing.

See SalesWings lead scoring software for the scoring workflow and the Salesforce lead scoring guide for implementation guidance. Related terms: Fit Score and Engagement Score.
