Lead Score Threshold

Lead Score Threshold

A lead score threshold is the point on a scoring model that triggers a defined action, such as review by sales, MQL status, routing or an alert. The threshold has no universal meaning outside the model that produced it.

SalesWings lead scoring rules and threshold logic
Lead scoring rules can be used to determine when a lead crosses a handoff or alert threshold.

Why there is no standard “good” score

A score of 80 can mean something completely different across two companies because the underlying points, scale and data are different. The useful threshold is the point where the company’s own historical outcomes and sales capacity suggest a different action should occur.

Thresholds should be tested against conversion

One practical approach is to compare conversion or opportunity creation across score bands. If leads above a certain range consistently progress at a higher rate, that can inform the handoff rule. If sales rejects a large share of leads that cross the threshold, the model or cutoff may need adjustment.

Separate the scoring threshold from the alert threshold

Not every score change deserves a notification. A lead may cross a qualification threshold without requiring an immediate Slack alert, while a selected high-value event may warrant an alert regardless of the total score. Keeping these rules separate can reduce notification fatigue.

Recency can change whether the threshold still means anything

If old activity remains in the score indefinitely, a previously active lead can stay above the threshold after interest has faded. Decay or recency rules can help, but the appropriate timing should reflect the actual sales cycle rather than an arbitrary fixed period.
