Lead Qualification

Lead Qualification

Lead qualification is the process of deciding whether a lead is worth direct sales attention. It can use fit, behavioural activity, stated needs and other business criteria, but the output is a decision or status rather than simply a score.

Scoring supports qualification; it does not replace it

A lead score can help decide which records deserve review, while a fit grade can show whether the prospect resembles the target customer. Qualification applies those inputs to an operational decision: should sales engage, should the lead stay in nurture, or should it be excluded?

What qualification criteria can include

Useful criteria often combine company and role fit with current activity. A lead might meet the fit requirement but show no recent interest, or show strong activity while working at a company outside the target market. Keeping those dimensions visible separately can make the decision easier to explain.

Marketing qualification and sales qualification are different steps

An MQL usually indicates that marketing’s agreed criteria have been met. Sales may then accept, reject or further qualify that lead based on additional context. Tracking those outcomes is important because a high rejection rate can indicate that the qualification rules do not match what sales actually considers valuable.

Validate qualification against pipeline

The practical test is whether qualified leads progress. Teams should review conversion from qualified lead to accepted sales lead, opportunity and revenue, then examine which criteria are associated with good or poor outcomes. This is more useful than relying on an industry-standard threshold that may not fit the business.
