Opportunity Scoring
Opportunity scoring assesses an open deal using signals beyond the opportunity stage alone. The aim is to help sales teams distinguish opportunities that are progressing from those that look healthy in the CRM but show weak or declining buyer activity.
Why stage alone can be misleading
An opportunity stage is usually updated by the rep. It is useful, but it can lag what is happening with the buyer. A late-stage opportunity with no recent activity from the buying group may deserve a different level of confidence from a deal at the same stage where several contacts are actively engaging.
Signals that can support opportunity scoring
Useful inputs may include recent activity from contacts connected to the account, changes in engagement, the number of active stakeholders, fit, opportunity age and other CRM context. The exact model should reflect the company’s own sales process rather than applying a universal formula.
SalesWings can bring behavioural context into Salesforce so opportunity prioritisation can use both CRM status and what buyers are actually doing.
Opportunity scoring is a prioritisation aid, not a forecast guarantee
A score can surface risk or momentum, but it cannot see every factor behind a deal. Procurement, budget changes, competitive dynamics and internal politics may never appear in behavioural data. The most useful role for opportunity scoring is therefore to focus review and rep attention, not to replace sales judgement.
Use it in pipeline reviews
One practical use is to compare the CRM stage with recent engagement. Deals where the two disagree are worth discussing: a low-stage opportunity with rising activity may deserve attention, while a late-stage deal with declining activity may need a reality check.
