Philip:
“With your experience using Salesforce Interaction Studio, Marketing Cloud, and Data Cloud, can you give us a broad overview of each platform and their benefit for Marketers?”
Ekaterina:
“Certainly! Overall, the Salesforce Marketecture of tools provides marketers the power to understand customer behavior, and deliver personalized experiences. In my current role at FLO, I specialize in bringing data to life and helping our clients provide an outstanding customer experience. Salesforce Marketing and Data Clouds are a part of that, helping teams execute targeted marketing campaigns across multiple channels, resulting in improved customer engagement, conversions, and overall marketing effectiveness.
Here is a more in depth look at what each platform can do:
Customer Data Cloud (ex. CDP) – primarily serves as a data orchestrator that helps marketers unify customer data and leverage it for marketing campaigns. By collecting data from various integrated sources, and connecting it to a centralized data repository, it forms single unified customer profiles. Marketers can enrich these profiles and have access to advanced segmentation capabilities. When all the hard work is done, the prepared segments can be activated further in platforms like Marketing Cloud, Personalization (ex. Interaction Studio), Salesforce CRM, etc.
Marketing Cloud – serves as a middleman between Data Cloud and Personalization. For marketers the tool is mainly used as a multi-channel campaign orchestrator as it provides automation features that allow marketers to set up customer journeys, automate campaign workflows across various channels, and triggers customized interactions based on customer behavior.
Marketing Cloud Personalization – powered by Interaction Studio it enables marketers to deliver personalized content, offers, and experiences to customers in real-time, based on their activity, preferences, and other contextual data. It also enriches Marketing Cloud customer journeys by analyzing and understanding customer engagement across various touchpoints.”

Philip:
“What role does Data Cloud play when building a personalization strategy?”
![]()
Ekaterina:
“I’d say it plays a crucial role! A successful personalization strategy requires a combination of data-driven insights and a single customer view. By bringing together data from different touchpoints and systems, Data Cloud provides a unified view of each customer’s interactions, preferences, and behaviors, so marketers can better understand a customer journey and identify opportunities for personalization. By leveraging these insights, marketers can tailor their messaging, content, and offers to meet individual customer needs and preferences.”

Philip:
“What best practices do you recommend for implementing a successful personalization strategy that uses marketing technologies such as Salesforce Marketing Personalization?”
Ekaterina:
“Each project is unique but I have four core principles I follow:
DEFINE GOALS – A personalization strategy should have clear goals that are aligned with overall marketing objectives such as improving conversion rate, increasing retention, reducing the bounce rate or increasing average order value, etc. In addition, the company might face some specific challenges that personalization initiatives could support.
UNIFY CUSTOMER DATA – We all know the concept of ‘garbage in – garbage out’ (GIGO). In the context of a personalization strategy, if low-quality or inaccurate data is fed into the system, the personalized insights, offers and predicted next best actions will also be of low quality or inaccurate. I have also seen cases where the overall user flow was sending data but was missing certain data inputs required to recommend which offers and products to promote. So, it’s not only data quality that matters, but the relevant data attributes are required as well. Companies must ensure proper data integration with relevant systems, such as CRM, e-commerce platforms, marketing automation technologies or customer support systems.
MEASURE RESULTS – We can’t manage what we can’t measure – after the initial campaigns are launched, regular monitoring and performance analysis are key. Marketing Cloud Personalization offers analytics and reporting tools so that key metrics, such as engagement and conversion rates, average order value, lifetime value, and revenue generated through personalized experiences are tracked. These and other insights can be used to optimize your strategies and make better data-driven decisions.
BUILD A DREAM TEAM -A crucial component for implementing a successful personalization strategy is a well informed Team. For example, some need technical knowledge related to data connectors, APIs, data mapping, and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
Others, familiarity with web and mobile technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and mobile app development frameworks, can be valuable for implementing tracking codes and capturing relevant customer data. This will hardly be achieved in-house without the help and ongoing guidance from trusted experts such as the ones we have at FLO. There should be dedicated roles for selected individuals who will support the strategy on an ongoing basis. After the platform implementation, team responsibilities include planning and managing the personalization campaign calendar, customer experience design, testing and optimization.”

Philip:
“What are some emerging trends or advancements in the field of personalization that marketers should be aware of when using tools like Salesforce Marketing Cloud?”
Ekaterina:
“The most trendy thing about personalization is Marketing GPT technology that was announced during the Salesforce Connections conference in June. Leveraging this breakthrough technology, Marketing Cloud users can help marketers save hours on creating campaign briefs, generating copy and visual content for emails and also building segments. When marketers are struggling with complex data-driven challenges, they can get guidance by interacting with Marketing GPT.
Marketing Cloud also has an open API that can be integrated with any third-party tool helping marketers leverage real-time capabilities, such as event-driven journeys and triggered messaging and deliver timely and customized experiences across various channels.
There is also huge potential with location-based personalization, which is mainly used in Marketing Cloud integration with mobile devices, and voice-activated personalization, which is gaining more traction for integrated voice enabled mobile devices and smart speakers.”
Philip:
“Most businesses see personalization as including First Name in an email, what are some other tips for customizing content for customers?”
Ekaterina:
“Starting an email with a personalized greeting is a common practice and a good starting point, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to personalization! True personalization involves tailoring content, offers, recommendations and user experience based on a deep understanding of individual customer intent, preferences, and behaviors. By collecting data such as purchase history, browsing behavior, demographics, device interactions, and other user activity, you can gain insights, create better targeted segments, and deliver relevant tailored recommendations.
Context and the channel matter a lot too! There are different touchpoints that users might interact with and this should be taken into account when personalizing customer journeys. I always focus my client’s attention on this to deliver relevant messaging and offer for various target groups while leveraging the AI-driven insights that are a native capability of Marketing Cloud Personalization.”
Philip:
“How do personalization strategies vary across different types of businesses?”
Ekaterina:
“Personalization gives businesses a competitive advantage right now, in the future, it will be a ‘must’ for all consumer facing companies..
No matter how big or small the company is, a customer-centric marketing approach can be tailored for any type of the business. I have seen a variety of approaches such as very simple personalization strategies when a client is new to the market and the starting point relies on data attributes and building dynamic content. There have also been complex projects, where the product offering on their website was generated based on the preferences of the user who was viewing the page. This case is perfect for not only recognised visitors, but also for the anonymous web visits..
A personalization strategy is not something that happens overnight. Like any other business initiative, it starts with the purpose and value, and potential benefits it offers. From a strategic perspective a shift to personalization is long term. Quick wins are achievable, you can build small simple personalized campaigns to get the results and see performance and make adjustments. I think Karl Wirth, the Co-Founder of Everage (now part of Salesforce Interaction Studio) said it best: “Businesses that fail to provide personalized experiences to their customers will be at a disadvantage. So it’s time to invest in personalization now.”

Where should I start with Personalization?
Begin by clarifying business outcomes, auditing data readiness, and mapping priority journeys where real-time decisions will lift revenue or retention.
Define 2–3 measurable goals, then validate tracking, identity stitching, and consent. Start small with one cross-channel use case (e.g., product recommendations on web plus triggered email), proving value before scaling. Configure data feeds, catalog objects, and key attributes, then deploy a lightweight campaign and A/B test variants.
Tip: document governance up front so experiments don’t outpace compliance.
What are some common pitfalls to avoid?
The biggest issues are weak data quality, unclear success metrics, over-personalizing early, and under-resourcing implementation and testing.
Avoid pushing experiences without verified event coverage and identity rules; enforce naming conventions and consent governance from day one. Don’t launch dozens of variants; rather, start with a few high-impact journeys and iterate. Ensure owners exist for data pipelines, creative, and analytics to keep velocity high.
Tip: evaluate stack fit and roadmap alternatives before committing long-term. For perspective, see our Salesforce Personalization alternative overview.
Where does Data Cloud fit alongside Personalization?
Data Cloud (now Data 360) unifies and segments customer data; Personalization executes real-time decisions and experiences across channels.
Use Data Cloud for identity resolution, governance, and audience building, then activate segments to Marketing Cloud and Personalization. Use Personalization for in-session decisioning, Einstein recommendations, and testing on web, mobile, and email. Together, they deliver customer-centric marketing experiences powered by trusted data and real-time context.
Tip: align taxonomy (attributes, events, segment names) between platforms to speed activation. Learn how Data 360 (formerly Data Cloud) unifies data.
What metrics matter most?
Prioritize outcome metrics tied to business value (conversion rate, incremental revenue/ROAS, average order value, retention, and CLV) then track engagement leading indicators.
Build a measurement plan that links each use case to a primary KPI and 1–2 diagnostic metrics (CTR, product views, time on site). Use holdout groups to estimate incremental lift and avoid attribution bias; report at the segment and experience level to surface winners quickly. Combined with SalesWings, Personalization can quickly deliver results both at the macro and micro level.
Tip: standardize a weekly scorecard so teams can optimize without waiting for quarterly reviews.
Does Personalization capture the activity of anonymous visitors?
Yes. Personalization captures behavioral events for unknown visitors and can tailor content and recommendations during the very first session.
You can use cookie-based identifiers to build profiles that later merge when a user authenticates or clicks an email, preserving history. Practical tactics include homepage hero variations, category-aware banners, and affinity-based recommendations that update in real time. Ensure consent is respected and define clear merge rules to avoid profile inflation.
Tip: design specific “welcome back” treatments for newly recognized users to accelerate first purchase.
How can I use Data Cloud integrations to enable personalization?
Integrate commerce, CRM, service, and product catalogs into Data Cloud, then activate real-time segments and attributes directly into Personalization.
High-value sources include purchase history, browsing events, inventory, pricing, subscriber status, and customer service signals. Use connectors or APIs to stream events with low latency and maintain a shared schema dictionary for attributes and consent flags. Start with a minimal set of “decision-making” fields, expanding only when you see incremental lift.
Tip: schedule data freshness checks to keep time-sensitive offers accurate.
How can I build a team around a data-driven personalization strategy?
Create a pod with a marketing owner, data engineer, web/app developer, and an experimentation lead, supported by governance and compliance.
The marketer defines use cases and KPIs; data engineering manages identity, feeds, and quality; developers implement tags, templates, and UI variants; the experimentation lead runs A/B tests and reporting. Add an architect to scale taxonomy and a product manager to maintain the roadmap once programs mature.
Tip: run a 90-day pilot cadence (plan, launch, learn) to establish repeatable operating rhythm.
